Universal Studios: Wicked - Elphaba

Elphaba’s gown in the Wicked movie, designed by Tony Award–winning costume designer Paul Tazewell, is a richly layered creation that blends gothic elegance with organic symbolism. Constructed from black silk chiffon, lace, and purple taffeta, the gown features swirling micro-pleated chiffon patterns inspired by mushrooms and natural textures, reflecting Elphaba’s grounded and misunderstood character. Both elegant and eerie, the gown becomes a visual metaphor for Elphaba’s journey: powerful, defiant, and unapologetically singular.
